onA Key West Tour Means Lots of Fun on the Water
Second largest coral reef in the world, ‘sportfishing capital of the world,’ and ‘diving capital of the US.’ These
are some of the terms used to describe Key West and the islands and waters around it. With such a fantastic
reputation, it’s no wonder that activities on the water are among the most popular things to do on a Key West
tour.
You’ll see excited locals and visitors and locals alike, diving among the reefs or in the shallows. Some are
diving to spear lionfish, others are diving for treasure, still others are exploring the artificial wrecks. You’ll see
anglers reeling in their lines excited at the prospect of having a large sailfish or kingfish on the hook.
You’ll see snorklers in all the shallow reefs, seeking out that elusive spotted red lobster or just enjoying
swimming among the fish. And you’ll see large ferry load of tourists watching the dolphins explode out of the
water in a gregarious shy hop. Watersport is everywhere you look, in Key West
Here are a few of the popular watersport you can indulge in on your Key West tour.
Catamaran Sailing in the Gulf of Mexico
What better way to spend your vacation than lazing on the deck of a luxury catamaran and soaking in the sun
(maybe even getting a great suntan). There are many tour companies that let you hire their sleek sophisticated
boats along with the crew and catering/dining services. You can spend the whole day, or even a couple of nights
out on the blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
You can book one of these charters while you are at Key West. You get a wide choice of boats. Some boats
even have large bedrooms and galley services. All of them have sophisticated sonar navigation systems that let
you make your way safely through the otherwise treacherous coral reefs.
Two common destination for these catamaran trips are the Dry Tortugas area and the Marquesa Keys area.
These are nice secluded spots with great coral reefs and marine life. In fact Marquesa keys has a beautiful
lagoon that feels like paradise.
Alternatively you can take a catamaran into the back country areas of Key Largo and do some fishing and
snorkeling out there.
Fishing Charters
Ernest Hemmingway and Zane Grey were two of the island’s most famous fishermen. Everyone who comes to
Key West wants to catch a marlin as big as the one Hemmingway caught or a sailfish as large as the ones Zane
Grey caught. How big a fish you catch is all up to your skill? But if you want to go out fishing there’s no dearth
of facilities to charter a boat and all the equipment, including friendly and knowledgeable guides – those
modern day “Sloppy Joes.”
All the skilled locals are always happy to give you a few tips and tit bits of news about where the fish are biting
today, and what works and what doesn’t. As a result, not only do you get to have a great fishing experience, you
also get to meet lots of wonderful people, all of whom have grown to love a Key West tour as much as you
have.
Besides Catamarans and fishing charters there are lots of other watersport that you can enjoy out on the Key
West waters. Make the most of your Key West tour and have fun every day. If you need help with any aspect of
