The Wonderful City of Key West
Posted by
onWhile you are on your Key West tour, you must visit the city of Marathon and explore the surrounding area. It’s
not as densely populated as Key West but that’s precisely the reason why so many visitors come here and why
so many locals prefer to live here. Here are some of the fun things to do and great places to see in that area.
Hawk’s Cay resort, Conch Key and little Conch Key
The Hawk’s key resort at Little Duck key has a reputation of being one of the top class resorts in the area. They
have their own marina. You can stay here and rent a boat to explore little Conch Key and Conch Key which are
nearby. It’s a short distance to paddle from the Hawk’s Cay marina and it could be a fun trip. Watch the
currents as you pass Tom’s Cut; the waters are deep at the Cut and there could be fast currents as you pass
there.
There’s a lagoon formed by the two roads that connect the highway to Little Conch Key. It would be a great
place to explore but it’s private. You’ll need permission from the Resort owners at Little Conch Key.
At Conch Key the Bay View Marina and the Bay View In are great places to stay. If you paddled to this Key
from the Hawks Cay resort, you call pull your Kayak up at the boat ramp there.
Dolphin Research Center
While the Theatre of the Sea at Islamorada is a fun place with great dolphin shows, the Dolphin Research
Center conducts research into different aspects of this adorable creature. How do they think? Why do they seem
so smart? Why are they able to communicate and bond do easily with humans? The scientists here study the
dolphins carefully and try to find answers to these questions.
If you visit this center at Grass Key the research assistants there will teach you all they have learnt about
dolphin behavior. They then use their knowledge to train dolphins to perform certain activities which you can
participate in.
The foot push, for example, or the dolphin fin ride, and the jumps through hoops. What’s more, they can train
YOU to become a dolphin trainer for a day. Now wouldn’t that make a great story to narrate to our friends when
they ask you what you did on your Key West tour?
Curry Hammock State Park
Tired of meeting people? Want to spend some time at a secluded spot? This is probably the largest uninhabited
spot in the Key Largo Big Pine area. It’s located on Little Crawl key and you can drive down to the park from
the Overseas Highway if you turn off at 56200 (ocean side).
There’s a large camping ground here with 28 camping sites. Right along the waterfront. There’s a large picnic
pavilion there with adequate restroom and shower facilities nearby. It’s wonderful to go kayaking here because
the waters are shallow and the currents are gentle. There’s lots of shoreline to explore, and lots of mangrove
trails too.
